The Great Rann Of Kutch

Indian Fox at Little Rann of Kutch

The Great Rann of Kutch together with the Little Rann of Kutch and the Banni grasslands make up the district of Kutch with an area of approximately 30,000 square kilometres.

It is one the largest districts of India. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea and the salt encrusted desert wilderness of the Rann of Kutch, this district is the last frontier of traditions, lifestyle, tribal culture, art & crafts that have changed little over the centuries.

During the monsoons, the flat desert of salty clay and mudflats, which average 15 metres above sea level, are filled with standing waters. There are also sandy islets of thorny scrub, forming a wildlife sanctuary and a breeding ground for some of the largest flocks of greater and lesser flamingos. The famous Indian Bustards, a critically endangered bird is also found around the Lala Bustard Sanctuary.

Miles and miles of empty land, interspersed with green thorny bushes and cloudless blue sky is the hallmark of this holiday destination.

Great Rann Of Kutch

Immerse yourself in this timeless land, soak up the sun, and rediscover your soul in this sacred land filled with temples, shrines and chattris. Kutch attracts not only nature lovers but also those interested in handicrafts, textiles, religious and pilgrimage sites. The Kutchi people from Banni, Anjar, Khavda, Rapar and Bhuj area are famous for their bandhani work on colourful fabric. Dholavira, with its remains of the ancient Indus Valley civilsation, and the Fossil Museum in Than are areas that have a lot to offer those interested in archeology. Not to mention Mandvi, Mundra and Kandla, the important ports of Gujarat. The heritage village of Tera is famous for its fort, water tanks and the heritage precincts.
