A Short Note on The Corbett Foundation

The Corbett Foundation (TCF) was established on Earth Day, 22 April 1994 by the late Mr. Dilip D. Khatau and his wife, Mrs Rina D. Khatau. They are the founders-owners of Infinity Resorts. Mr Khatau was  a former Member of the National Board for Wildlife in India, and a Member of Indian Wildlife Business Council of Confederation of India Industry. TCF is a non-profit, non-governmental organization fully dedicated to the cause of conservation of wildlife. TCF’s Mission Statement says, “The Corbett Foundation consists of a group of dedicated men and women who are committed to the conservation of wildlife and nature, and fulfilling the ambition that human beings and nature must live together in harmony.” TCF strongly believes that conservation requires a multi-faceted approach, and hence it is actively involved in conservation-oriented research, facilitating advocacy campaigns, spreading environmental awareness, providing primary healthcare for forest-dependent communities and engaging in local community welfare through vocational, skills development and livelihoods training and sustainable development initiatives. TCF is a Member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and a Member of the Global Tiger Forum. TCF has been accredited by Credibility Alliance in 2014 under the Desirable Norms for Voluntary Organizations in India.

TCF dedicatedly works across important wildlife habitats in India, namely Corbett Tiger Reserve (in Uttarakhand), Kanha Tiger Reserve (in Madhya Pradesh), Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve (in Madhya Pradesh) and Kaziranga Tiger Reserve (in Assam), and around the Greater Rann of Kutch (in Gujarat). In addition to the above areas, TCF also extends its activities to Kanha-Pench and Bandhavgarh-Sanjay Dubri corridors (in Madhya Pradesh), Pakke Tiger Reserve (in Arunachal Pradesh) and the Little Rann of Kutch and coastal parts of Kutch (in Gujarat). TCF is the recipient of WWF - PATA Tiger Conservation Award in 2000 and 2001, TOFT - Sanctuary Wildlife Tourism Award for the best Wildlife Tourism Related Community Initiative of the Year 2014, Vasundhara Mitra Award 2015, MP Tourism’s Best Responsible Tourism Project Award 2016 and Americares Spirit of Humanity Awards – Regional Winner in Livelihoods Category, 2016. TCF is represented on the State Wildlife Advisory Boards of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, State-level Bustard Conservation Committee of Gujarat and Local Advisory Committee of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh.

TCF has implemented its programmes in over 400 villages in Corbett, Kutch, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Kaziranga since 1994.

Skill Development Programmes

TCF has total staff strength of around 90+ dedicated individuals including professional staff, administrative and support staff. The highly qualified professional personnel are drawn from diverse disciplines and highly specialized fields such as wildlife sciences, life sciences, social sciences, veterinary sciences, geography, medical sciences, engineering, rural development, public health, education, public relations, advertising and business management.

Local communities and wildlife commonly share natural ecosystems, and this often gives rise to conflict situations. The health and well-being of local communities is directly linked to their willingness to participate in wildlife conservation efforts towards maintaining healthy ecosystems. TCF has adopted a multi-pronged strategy to help create a harmonious co-existence between wildlife and human beings by addressing issues such as reducing human-wildlife conflict, conducting conservation-oriented research, providing sustainable livelihoods, providing primary healthcare to forest-dependent communities, promoting environmental awareness, promoting renewable energy, promoting integrated watershed management projects and cattle care and breed improvement program.
